South African rapper AKA and Nigerian singer Davido are among nominees for the 2015 MTV Europe Awards. Both artists have been nominated for the Best African Act category
.
The nomination offers early Christmas presents to both artists who took trophies at the MTV Africa Music Awards held in Durban, South Africa earlier in the year. AKA won for a collaborative song with DA Les and Burna Boy. Davido received the award for Best Male Artist, beating off AKA, TanzanianDiamond Platnumz, Ghanaian Sarkodie as well as compatriot Wizkid.
In a slight repeat of that category at the MAMA, the other nominees are Diamond Platnumz and MAMA Best Female winner Yemi Alade. It does appear the MAMA categories for Best Male and Female feed nominees directly into the Best African Act category at the MTV Europe Award. The latter award, however, has a twist, as it empowers fans to select a fifth nominee by voting.
Fans can vote any of the following: Nigeria’s Wizkid, South Africa’s KO or Cassper Nyovest, Ghana’s Stonebwoy and Cote d’Ivoire’s DJ Arafat. The artist with the highest amount of votes will join the ranks of the artists already announced. Voting closes 14 September.
Not surprisingly, all of the nominees were winners at the 2015 MAMA. Tanzanian Diamond Platnumz won the Best Live Act category. And for Yemi Alade, the MTV Europe award nomination caps a remarkable year following her wins at the MAMA and at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards. Ms Alade is also nominated for multiple awards at the All Africa Music Awards takin place in Lagos, Nigeria in November.
Last year’s Best African Act category at the MTV Europe Awards was won by Kenyan band Sauti Sol.
The 2015 edition of the MTV Europe Awards holds 25 October at Milan, Italy.
